Preamble
Our shield bears our motto: “Deus Lux Mea Est – God Is My Light.” The psalmist’s words remind each of us that God is the light and life of our University Community.
Founded by the United States Catholic bishops in 1887, under the papal charter issued by Pope Leo XIII, the University is an academic community faithful to the Church’s teaching that every person is a son or daughter of God, created in the image and likeness of His Son, Jesus Christ.
Our relationships are governed by the two great commandments: “Love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, your mind and your strength and love your neighbor as yourself.”
Mindful of these teachings, The Catholic University of America calls upon her sons and daughters to create a culture of light and love on our campus and in our lives.
Pledge
As a member of The Catholic University of America community, I promise:
- To pursue a life of virtue as I progress in my studies
- To recognize that each person is created in God’s image and likeness
- To live in right relationship with other members of our community, seeking reconciliation when it is called for and asking forgiveness when I fail
- To build a community where everyone is treated with respect
- To reject and witness against bullying and violence toward women or men of any race, creed, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status, or persons with disabilities
- To treat the University and private property with care and respect
- To see myself as a child of God, choosing self-respect, a healthy life-style and gratitude for my gifts and talents
- To share my own special gifts with the community
